A Safety Certificate — commonly called a roadworthy certificate or RWC — is the inspection document for light vehicles in Queensland. What Is a Certificate of Inspection (COI)?
A Certificate of Inspection (COI) is the inspection document for heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM. It confirms the vehicle meets the required heavy vehicle safety standards and is part of keeping a heavy vehicle's registration current. A COI generally needs to be renewed on a periodic basis. How to Tell Which One You Need
The simplest way to decide is by vehicle weight. Check your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) on the compliance plate or registration papers:
- Under 4.5 tonnes GVM — generally a Safety Certificate (RWC).
- Over 4.5 tonnes GVM — generally a Certificate of Inspection (COI).
- Interstate heavy vehicle being registered in QLD — may also require an HVRAS inspection in addition to a COI.
